About Sue

I have over 20 years experience working with a wide variety of people and issues through psychotherapy, counselling, pastoral care, personal development and independent consultation.

I am a Certified Transactional Analysis Psychotherapist, a BACP Accredited Counsellor / Psychotherapist and I am UKCP and ITA Registered. I adhere to the code of ethics of these professional bodies.

In my psychotherapy and counselling practice I work with both individuals and couples. I also offer supervision to individuals and small groups.

Underpinning my work is the belief that:

  • All people matter and are of value
  • We all have the potential to be authentic, alive, responsive and fulfilled human beings.
  • Our thoughts, feelings and behaviours, our bodies and our beliefs, are deeply interlinked.
  • Our past has a profound influence on how we are in the present. Often, much of this influence is beyond our awareness.
  • We need to deal with the negative consequences of past experiences in order to create the conditions needed for growth and fulfilment.
  • We are people in relationship. Understanding and improving how we relate to others and how we relate to ourselves is an important part of psychotherapy and counselling.
  • With the help of a therapist, and through a therapeutic relationship, we can make positive and lasting changes in our lives.

My main approach to psychotherapy and counselling is that of Transactional Analysis, though I complement my work with insights from other recognised therapies when appropriate. My original training in Person Centred Counselling still provides the foundation of my approach to people, based on Carl Rogers' core conditions of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard.

My academic background is in Social Psychology, Theology and Women's Studies. In my M.Phil thesis I explored the importance of self esteem (the attitudes that a person holds towards him or her self) to psychological health, and factors contributing to low self esteem and depression in women.
